86th Academy Award Predictions: Year in Advance

The dust from the 85th Academy Awards has barely settled, but I will nonetheless be predicting next year's Oscars.  Sure, most of these predictions will be useless but last year I made it 2 years running that I correctly predicted 4 of the Best Picture nominees (Argo, Django Unchained, Lincoln and Zero Dark Thirty) in my year in advance predictions.  I also correctly predicted 3 of the 5 supporting actresses.  That's not even including Anne Hathaway, whom I predicted would get nominated in the Lead Actress category being unfamiliar with Les Miserables.  I also predicted 3 of the 5 nominees in the Adapted Screenplay, Animated Feature and Production Design category.  So let's move onto this upcoming year's Oscars:

  1. Nice Predictions, very similiar to mine. here are a few more movies who I think could have a good chance at this year's Oscar race:

    Alexander Payne's "Nebraska"
    David o. Russel's "American Bullshit"
    Lee Daniels's "The Butler"
Saving Mr. Banks (with Tom Hanks as Walt Disney and Emma Tompson as P.L. Travers)
    Aaron Sorkin's "Steve Jobs" biopic

  2. Nebraska is a definite threat, and if it's received even better than The Descendants it will have to be considered the frontrunner. I'm not sold on The Butler or Saving Mr. Banks yet though. I don't think American Bullshit and Aaron Sorkin's Jobs biopic will make it out in 2013.

  3. Yeah, I'm also not sure about the Jobs biopic (currently, he has no announced director or a cast), but "American Bullishit" already began shooting in the East Coast, and Russel is a fast-working director ("Silver Linings..." was shot in just 33 days), so it's easy to assume it will be done until the holiday season.

By the way: I think that "The Fifth Estate" and "Monuments Men" will have a much bigger roll in this year's race than what you have predicted.

  4. I only see The Fifth Estate as an acting contender at this point. Everyone seems to think Monuments Men is the frontrunner at this point, but I'm just a bit suspicious of it after The Ides of March only scored 1 nomination. Plus there really is no need to reward George Clooney during this upcoming Oscars race, he won an Oscar this year and he was nominated twice the year before. I could definitely be way wrong, but those are my two cents for now.
