List of Demands: 86th Academy Awards Nominations

With the Oscar nominations announcement being tomorrow morning here are the three things I would like to see most:

1. Before Midnight is Nominated for Best Adapted Screenplay

Normally I reserve spots on this list for borderline or underdog contenders, but Kathryn Bigelow would have certainly been #1 on my list last year if I knew she was going to miss.  So while I think Before Midnight is in safe territory in the Best Adapted Screenplay, I’m putting it here anyway.  Before Midnight is one of the best films of the year and this would be a nice way for the Academy to reward it.

2. The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug Receives Multiple Nominations

The second Hobbit film won’t have a chance in the Best Makeup and Hairstyling category like its predecessor did, but it still deserves multiple nominations.  Best Picture and Best Supporting Actress (for Evangeline Lilly) obviously won’t happen even if they are deserving, but nominations for Howard Shore’s continued excellence in musical contributions to Middle-earth, the ambitious visual effects and the standout production design certainly are possible.

3. Robert Redford is Nominated But Not At The Expense of Tom Hanks

Best Lead Actor has the potential to be one of this upcoming Oscar ceremony’s strongest categories.  It would be a shame to see Robert Redford’s incredible performance as a lone sailor miss out.  However, if a surprise should come and Redford scores a nomination, it would be just as much of a shame to see Tom Hanks to miss instead (or Chiwetel Ejiofor for that matter but if he missed it would be the biggest snub of the morning).  Here’s hoping that they both have room to get into the category.
